Replacement Windows in Maryland

The state of Maryland enjoys a moderate climate, with average mean temperatures ranging from 33 degrees in January to 77 degrees in July. However, colder winter nights and hotter summer days are not unusual, so the cost of maintaining a comfortable temperature in Maryland homes can be a concern. Since an estimated 30 percent of heating and cooling losses occur through windows, Maryland homeowners should consider energy efficient window replacement.

Window Replacement Factors to Consider

Older homes in Maryland with single-pane, double-hung windows can achieve the greatest gains in efficiency, but any home over 10 years old can benefit from new replacement windows. Factors to consider are the frame, number of panes, heat transfer, and coatings. Wood frames insulate well, but require a good deal of maintenance. Aluminum frames are poor insulators. Vinyl window frames are the best cost/performance choice. Window thermal performance is rated by U-value, which is similar to the R-value rating for insulation. Two national organizations provide standards and testing--the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) and the Insulated Glass Certification Council.
